Robert Blecher

Deputy Program Director, Middle East and North Africa

Robert Blecher

Robert Blecher is the MENA Deputy Program Director at International Crisis Group, where he helps oversee the research of the program’s regional analysts. He was previously the organisation’s Project Director and Senior Analyst for Israel/Palestine. Before joining Crisis Group, he consulted with NGOs and the UN, and prior to that, taught at the University of Richmond and Stanford University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Middle East history – leaving him a perpetually recovering academic fascinated by the political and historical legacies that policymakers inherit. Rob, who lived for many years in Damascus, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Cairo and Amman, currently resides in New York.

His areas of expertise include the geopolitics of the Middle East, violent extremism and modern conflict, US policy toward the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian and Arab-Israeli conflicts, and Jordan. His languages, in addition to English, include Arabic, French and Hebrew.
