After nearly three decades of civil war and political paralysis, Angola now faces the task of ensuring a peaceful, fair and transparent democratic transition. Long-awaited elections--the first since 1992--are now expected in late 2007. A peace agreement was signed between Luanda and factions of the Cabindan separatist movement FLEC in August 2006, leading to renewed efforts to integrate inhabitants of the oil-rich enclave into the political and economic life of the country.
Crisis Group's work in Angola focused on the need for well-defined legal, technical, material and financial frameworks for future elections, as a means to prevent, resolve and contain conflict in Angola.
