Crisis Group reports and briefings on the Arab-Israeli conflict draw on analyses of the obstacles to a durable settlement and the past failures of the peace process in order to put forward new and comprehensive strategies that can bring about a sustainable peace for Israel and the Palestinians as well as neighbouring Syria and Lebanon.
Reports on the conflict have focused on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, examining the growing divergence between the Palestinian Authority-governed West Bank and the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamist movement Hamas. Crisis Group has highlighted the risks of this increasing rift for and emphasized the urgent need to restore a measure of Palestinian national unity and to pursue strategies that can integrate Hamas into the political process if a lasting settlement with Israel is to be reached.
Crisis Group has also reported on the situation in Lebanon, where the polarization of politics along sectarian lines has led to a tense stalemate in which unresolved issues such as the military power of the Shiite Hizbollah group and its conflict with Israel have the potential to lead to renewed violence.
A number of Crisis Group reports focus on Syria and its prospects for further negotiations with Israel and engagement with the international community.
