CrisisWatch N°76, 1 December 2009

1 December 2009

Three actual or potential conflict situations around the world deteriorated and none improved in November 2009, according to CrisisWatch. In Yemen, fighting in the Saada region spilled across the country’s border when the Houthi-led rebels launched an incursion into Saudi Arabia, causing Saudi forces to respond with a major offensive. In DR Congo, the northwest province of Equateur erupted in violent clashes over farming and fishing rights, leaving at least 100 civilians dead. November also brought a sharp escalation in tensions between Venezuela and Colombia, as Venezuelan President Chávez stepped up aggressive rhetoric following Colombia’s military base deal with the U.S.
