AFRICA PROGRAM

Central Africa

Crisis Group's Nairobi-based team monitors and reports on internal and external threats to peace in the Great Lakes and surrounding region as well as progress towards reconciliation in Rwanda and political transitions under way in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Horn of Africa

In Sudan, Crisis Group suggests strategies for peace in Africa's largest country, riven by ethnic and religious divisions, and multiple conflicts, including in Darfur. Crisis Group's reporting in the region also focuses on the power vacuum in the failed state of Somalia, continuing conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia and its consequences for the region as a whole.

Southern Africa

Crisis Group prepares reports on Southern African countries at risk of conflict, such as Zimbabwe, or facing its possible recurrence, as in Angola. Crisis Group also looks at South Africa’s conflict resolution and peace-keeping efforts within the framework of SADC, NEPAD, the AU and the UN.

West Africa

Crisis Group's reporting in the region focuses on the post-conflict reconstruction processes in both Sierra Leone and Liberia, the peace process in Côte d'Ivoire, as well as violence and political insecurity in both Nigeria and Guinea. Crisis Group maintains a watching brief on the wider West African region.

Crisis Group's Africa program is coordinated out of Nairobi. For more information, see the related project pages (links above).
