President Joe Biden announced that “we are ending all American support for offensive operations in the war in Yemen including relevant arms sales… At the same time, Saudi Arabia faces missile attacks and UAV strikes and other threats from Iranian supplied forces in multiple countries. We are going to continue to help Saudi Arabia defend its sovereignty and its territorial integrity and its people”. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan separately noted that the U.S. decision “does not extend to actions against AQAP… it extends to the types of offensive operations that have perpetuated a civil war in Yemen that has led to a humanitarian crisis”. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince bin Farhan hailed “the U.S.’s commitment… to cooperate with the Kingdom in defending its security and territory”, adding: “We look forward to working with [the newly-appointed U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen] Tim Lenderking to achieve our joint goal of a comprehensive political resolution in Yemen as part of our shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous region”.
