Strait of Hormuz 0
21 December 2020

The U.S. Navy announced that “the nuclear-power Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) along with the guided-missile cruisers USS Port Royal (CG 73) and USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) transited the Strait of Hormuz entering the Arabian Gulf”. Relatedly, media reports claimed that an Israeli submarine was en route to the Gulf in what was described as “a message to Iran”. The following day, CENTCOM Commander Kenneth McKenzie noted that “there are a lot of reasons for bringing a submarine into the straight into the Arabian Gulf… [it] is going to be on the surface. So you can take that for what it’s worth”.
