A Pentagon spokesperson indicated that “without getting into attribution, many of these attacks [in Iraq] are conducted by militias that are backed by Iran, and we have made clear the degree to which Iran support for these militias needs to stop”. Asked to comment on media reports about a senior IRGC commander urging “Iraqi Shiite militias to step up attacks on U.S. targets during a meeting in Baghdad”, the spokesperson maintained that “we have made very clear our concern about these attacks, and the President’s firm commitment to protect the safety and security of our personnel in Iraq.  You have seen us act in the past in that regard, and we always retain the right of self-defence”.
