U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo maintained that "we're trying to help Iraq become an independent, sovereign state disconnected from any other country... they can be the linchpin of the Middle East, and we're trying to build that out". Recalling a recent decision to designate an Iraqi militia purportedly backed by Iran, Pompeo added that "there may well be other organisations that we designate".
