President Maduro remarked that Iran and Venezuela “are helping each other… The Iranian experience [in dealing with sanctions] will help us reinforce our management capacity”. He also indicated that “if it is possible and convenient, we will buy… missiles” from Iran. Colombian President Ivan Duque had a few days prior cited intelligence reports to warn that “there is interest from the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro in acquiring some medium- and long-range missiles through Iran”. On 25 August, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo argued that “it is no surprise that the illegitimate Maduro regime is looking to Iran for deadly weapons. This is exactly why we are restoring all UN sanctions on Iran, including the arms embargo. We will fully enforce these sanctions”.
