After Iran announced that it had exceeded a JCPOA limit on its stockpile of low-enriched uranium, President Trump remarked that “they [Iran] know what they’re doing. They know what they’re playing with, and I think they’re playing with fire”. In a statement, the White House argued that “there is little doubt that even before the deal’s existence, Iran was violating its terms”; it added that “maximum pressure on the Iranian regime will continue until its leaders alter their course of action”. Secretary of State Pompeo called on “the international community to restore the longstanding non-proliferation standard of no enrichment for Iran’s nuclear program”. U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton argued that “there is no reason for Iran to increase its enrichment unless it’s part of an effort to reduce the breakout time to produce nuclear weapons”.
