A State Department spokesperson asserted that “nothing we’ve heard in recent weeks suggests that they [ie, Iran] have changed their position” in the nuclear negotiations, going to note “the remarkable bravery and courage that the Iranian people are exhibiting through their peaceful demonstrations, through their exercise of their universal right to freedom of assembly and to freedom of expression... Our focus right now is on shining a spotlight on what theyre doing and supporting them in the ways we can”. The next day, a White House official maintained: “It’s not that we don’t want to see the JCPOA reimplemented, we of course do. We’re just not in a position where… that’s a likely outcome anytime in the near future”.
