President Trump nominated the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, to replace Rex Tillerson as secretary of state. Prior to assuming the directorship Pompeo had referred to the JCPOA as a "disastrous deal with the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism", and in 2017 he called for the use of "all the tools available of U.S. power" to push back against Iran.
