In an interview, Secretary Pompeo stated that "the Europeans are wedded to the JCPOA. We’ve made a very different decision. We think any money that goes to the Islamic Republic of Iran will end up in the hands of Qasem Soleimani and be used for mischief and, most importantly, will be used to create real hardship for the Iranian people. And so we are determined to make sure that the Iranian people’s voices are heard". Pompeo further indicated that, contrary to Iranian accusations of U.S. involvement in a deadly 13 February attack against an IRGC vehicle in south-eastern Iran, "the Americans had nothing to do with this at all".
