CENTCOM Commander Kenneth McKenzie assessed that “Iran still holds its goals for regional hegemony, and… as part of that, they are intent on attempting to eject the U.S. from the region… They are calculating how they can achieve that goal without crossing a red line of ours”. McKenzie further argued that “after the events of January, Iran is newly sensitive to our will and our willingness to employ those forces should we be threatened by their malign activities. So we are postured and we will continue to be postured in the region, working closely with all our partners, all our friends in the region, to ensure that we’re ready and Iran sees very clearly what would be… the high cost of any malign activity on their part”.
