Secretary Pompeo explained that a 13 May visit to Brussels involved sharing "the threats and concerns we have about actions that the Iranians are taking or are potentially taking, and we wanted to make sure they [i.e the Europeans] understood the risks as we saw them, and I shared that with them in some detail". "We fundamentally do not seek a war with Iran", Pompeo added, further indicating that "we've also made clear to the Iranians that if American interests are attacked, we will most certainly respond in an appropriate fashion".
