Referring to the U.S. triggering snapback of pre-JCPOA UN sanctions on Iran, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asserted that “We will make sure that the Islamic Republic of Iran doesn’t have the hundreds of billion dollars that would flow from being able to sell weapon systems to become an arms dealer around the world… the U.S. will use every tool in its arsenal to make sure that the Chinese and the Russians are incapable of delivering weapon systems to Iran that threaten us”. In related remarks, the U.S. Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, argued: “Iran is in violation of its voluntary nuclear commitments. The condition has been met to initiate snapback… Whether people support or oppose what we’re doing is not material”.
