Media reports citing U.S. officials indicated that the U.S. had “transferred a significant number of Patriot antimissile interceptors to Saudi Arabia within the past month”, adding: “The transfers sought to ensure that Saudi Arabia is adequately supplied with the defensive munitions it needs to fend off drone and missile attacks by the Iran-backed Huthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen”. A U.S. military spokesperson did not confirm the reporting, but maintained that “we’re committed to helping Saudi Arabia defend itself against very real threats to their territory and to their people coming out of Yemen. We’re in constant discussions with the Saudis about this threat environment and always looking for ways to continue to help them defend themselves”.
