With the deadline for U.S. sanctions waivers approaching, the White House announced that President "Trump has decided not to reissue Significant Reduction Exceptions (SREs) when they expire in early May", adding that "the U.S., Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates...along with our friends and allies, have agreed to take timely action to assure that global demand is met as all Iranian oil is removed from the market". Secretary of State Pompeo noted in a statement that the move "builds on the already significant successes of our pressure campaign", and indicated that "we will continue to apply maximum pressure on the Iranian regime until its leaders change their destructive behaviour, respect the rights of the Iranian people, and return to the negotiating table". Pompeo also briefed the press regarding the decision. National Security Advisor John Bolton also weighed in, positing that "coupled with the recent designation of the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, today's announcement should make the U.S.' resolve abundantly clear to Tehran".
