U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley affirmed that “if they [ie, Iran] start getting too close [to a nuclear weapon], too close for comfort, then of course we will not be prepared to sit idly by”. “If they choose not to go back into the deal, then obviously we’re going to have to see other efforts - diplomatic and otherwise - to try to address Iran’s nuclear ambitions”, he added. Relatedly, CENTCOM Commander Kenneth McKenzie maintained that “our president said they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon… the diplomats are in the lead on this, but Central Command always has a variety of plans that we could execute, if directed”.
