Secretary Pompeo indicated that he was "saddened... but not surprised" by regional and international responses against President Trump's decision to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. He also countered the suggestion that the move set a precedent, arguing that "this is an incredibly unique situation. Israel was fighting a defensive battle to save its nation, and it cannot be the case that a UN resolution is a suicide pact".
