A U.S. official confirmed U.S. backing for a Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) that would "serve as a bulwark against Iranian aggression, terrorism, extremism, and will bring stability to the Middle East". An Iranian official subsequently opined that given "the lack of coherence and consensus and the gap that exists among these countries, this issue should be viewed as no more than a slogan".
