Secretary of State Anthony Blinken talked to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani about “robust diplomatic support for the peace process focused on helping the parties to the conflict achieve a durable and just political settlement and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire that benefits all Afghans”. Blinken also noted that “the U.S. is reviewing the February 2020 U.S.-Taliban agreement”. A Pentagon spokesperson maintained that “the Taliban are not meeting their commitments to reduce violence and reduce their ties to al-Qaeda”, adding: “As long as they’re not meeting their commitments, it’s going to be difficult for anybody at that negotiating table to meet their commitments. In fact it wouldn’t be the wise course. We obviously are still committed to ending this war, but we want to do it in a responsible way”.
