A U.S. diplomatic spokesperson indicated that “even with the talks in Vienna focused squarely on the nuclear program, we have taken advantage of every single opportunity to raise the cases of Americans and other foreign nationals who are unjustly detained against their will by Iran… this practice is unacceptable, it does not give Tehran any leverage, and the world is united against this abhorrent practice of holding human beings, holding individuals, for political leverage”. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior U.S. officials also called on Iran to free a detainee on medical grounds.
