As major U.S. sanctions came into effect against more than 700 Iranian individual and entities, Secretary Pompeo underscored that "the Iranian regime has a choice. It can either do a 180-degree turn from its outlaw course of action and act like a normal country, or it can see its economy crumble". He also identified eight countries that received "temporary allotments", while noting that "we continue negotiations to get all of the nations to zero [crude purchases from Iran]". Treasury Secretary Mnuchin pledged that "the maximum pressure exerted by the U.S. is only going to mount from here".
