U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan indicated that President Biden and his Russian counterpart had a “productive” discussion on Iran, and posited that the JCPOA “is an area where Russia and the U.S. can continue to consult closely to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon”. Sullivan further noted: “the more Iran demonstrates a lack of seriousness at the negotiating table, the more unity there is among the P5+1 and the more they will be exposed as the isolated party in this negotiation”. Relatedly, Secretary of State Antony Blinken asserted that “As we continue to believe that a return to compliance with the agreement is the best way forward, that is not an infinite prospect, because what we will not allow is for Iran to, in effect, tread water at talks and not come forward with any meaningful and serious propositions for resolving the outstanding issues to returning to compliance while at the same time advancing its program”.
