The U.S., France, Germany and the UK jointly praised the adoption by the IAEA Board of Governors, in a 30-2 vote (with three abstentions), of a resolution on “Iran’s insufficient cooperation with the IAEA on serious and outstanding safeguards issues”. The U.S./E3 called on “Iran to heed the call of the international community to fulfil its legal obligations, and cooperate with the IAEA to fully clarify and resolve issues without further delay”. “If Iran does this and the Director General is able to report that the unresolved safeguards issues are no longer outstanding, we would see no need for further Board consideration and action on these issues”, they added. Separately, the U.S. IAEA envoy asserted that “we are not taking this action to escalate a confrontation for political purposes. We seek no such escalation… We seek credible explanations, consistent with Iran’s safeguards obligations, that can finally put these issues behind us”.
