The White House issued a fact sheet marking one year since President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the JCPOA. Secretary of State Pompeo also noted the anniversary with a press statement, which included reference to Iran's decision that day to curb its compliance with the agreement. This move, the statement suggested, constituted a "defiance of international norms and a blatant attempt to hold the world hostage". It went on to say that Iran's "threat to renew nuclear work that could shorten the time to develop a nuclear weapon underscores the continuing challenge the Iranian regime poses to peace and security worldwide". The U.S. Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, gave public remarks on the occasion, during which he posited that "by nearly every measure, the regime is weaker today that when we took office two years ago. Its proxies are underfunded and demoralised. Unless the regime demonstrates a change in behaviour, the pressure will mount". He also warned that "we are one errant Iranian-supplied missile away from a regional conflict", maintained that "the Iranian people are much closer to us than they are to their own regime", and, citing the head of the IRGC's Qods force as Iran's "real foreign minister", indicated that "we do not fall into the trap of paying attention to what Zarif says".
