A senior U.S. official asserted that Iran “does not have any good options to fund an even modest budget”, adding that the government had produced “a false budget… Iran cannot be trusted to run its own economy. This regime cannot be trusted to run its own economy”. He also remarked that “the Iranian people know that the regime must swallow the bitter medicine of sanctions in order to finally change behaviour. They know that corrupt officials are mismanaging the economy are responsible for their plight”. The official went on to state that “we’ve graduated now from a maximum economic pressure campaign against Iran to a super-maximum economic pressure campaign where we look toward wrapping up our enforcement and continuing to designate key strategic targets”.
