Secretary of State Mike Pompeo underscored the U.S. view that pre-JCPOA UN sanctions “will snap back at midnight GMT on 20 September… if any member of the UN Security Council introduces a resolution to continue sanctions relief, the U.S. will oppose it. If no resolution is introduced, the sanctions on Iran will return”. Relatedly, Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi urged for an extension of UN arms restrictions on Iran during a visit to Berlin; his German counterpart indicated that “we are trying to reach a diplomatic solution so that there will be an arms embargo on Iran in the future”.
