We are deeply saddened at the passing of Lord Paddy Ashdown, a close friend of the International Crisis Group. Paddy served as a Crisis Group Trustee from 2000 to 2002 and 2008 to 2010. He died on 22 December 2018, aged 77. During his distinguished career, Paddy Ashdown was best known on the international stage as the United Nations’ High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2002 to 2006. He played a central role in bringing the Yugoslavian wars to an end, overseeing the implementation of the Dayton peace agreement, which has since kept the peace in the Balkans. "Paddy’s commitment to conflict resolution went well beyond the call of duty. He didn’t hesitate to put himself in harm’s way, traveling to besieged Sarajevo to assess the situation with his own eyes", said Robert Malley, Crisis Group’s President and CEO. "He wasn’t called the ‘action man of British diplomacy’ for nothing". "Paddy's efforts to help Crisis Group grow and make more of an impact globally while a board member deserve recognition. I knew him as a friend and colleague both in Bosnia and in British politics.
