Ukrainian Refugees and the Coming Winter

In this video, Crisis Group analysts Simon Schlegel and Azadeh Moaveni sit down in Warsaw to discuss the mass movement of Ukrainians following the start of the Ukraine-Russia war, and how the situation could become more precarious in winter.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February, about a quarter of Ukraine's citizens have fled, with almost six million crossing over the Polish border. More than 90% of the refugees are women and children, many of whom are vulnerable. However, with the changing dynamics of the war, there are far fewer coming over the border each day, and there are some days when more refugees are going back to Ukraine than arriving in Poland. With winter coming and the war in Ukraine still ongoing, that could very well change. The international community should be aware of this and prepare accordingly.
