Jean-Marie Guéhenno served as the United Nations Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations between 2000 and 2008. He is the author of The Fog of Peace: A Memoir of Peacekeeping in the 21st Century.

A former French diplomat, he served as Director of Policy Planning at France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as Chairman of the Institute of Advanced Studies in National Defence. In 2012, he chaired President François Hollande’s review of France’s defense and national security posture.

In 2012, he was appointed deputy joint special envoy for Syria by the United Nations and the Arab League. Prior to joining Crisis Group, he was director of Columbia University’s Center for International Conflict Resolution.
