He is the author of The Fog of Peace: A Memoir of Peacekeeping in the 21st Century. A former French diplomat, he served as Director of Policy Planning at France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as Chairman of the Institute of Advanced Studies in National Defence. In 2012, he chaired President François Hollande’s review of France’s defense and national security posture. In 2012, he was appointed deputy joint special envoy for Syria by the United Nations and the Arab League.
