With a special focus on Mali and Burkina Faso, he specialises on the economic drivers of violence using data-driven research methods. Professional Background Prior to joining Crisis Group, José worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Economics & Peace in Sydney, where he developed metrics to quantify peace and measure the economic impact of violence. Before that, José was an Associate Analyst at the European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris, where he focused his research on the EU's CSDP missions & operations in Africa. José has also worked for the conflict prevention unit of the European External Action Service in Brussels and for the research unit of the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre in New York. He holds an MSc in Conflict Studies from the London School of Economics and a joint-BSc in Economics, Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick and Sciences-Po Paris.
