Former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb joins Crisis Group’s Board

The International Crisis Group is honoured to announce the appointment of former Prime Minister of Finland Alexander Stubb as a new member of its Board of Trustees. Alexander Stubb brings his long experience in international affairs to help Crisis Group fulfil its global mission of preventing, mitigating and resolving deadly conflict.

Alexander Stubb served as prime minister (2014-2015), finance minister (2015-2016), foreign minister (2008-2011) and trade and Europe minister of Finland (2011-2014). He was also a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008 and served as a member of Finland's national parliament from 2011 to 2017.

Prior to holding political office, Alexander Stubb worked as an adviser at the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in both Helsinki and Brussels, and as an adviser to then European Commission President Romano Prodi. He was involved in negotiating the Treaties of Amsterdam, Nice and Lisbon, which have served as important documents in the creation and direction of the European Union.

Alexander Stubb is currently the director of the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute, based in Florence, Italy.

His experience at the highest levels of government, including negotiating a ceasefire between Russia and Georgia in 2008, will bring a unique perspective to help us better tailor our recommendations to policymakers and key conflict actors”, said Crisis Group’s Co-Chair of the Board Frank Giustra.

The board of the International Crisis Group consists of 48 individuals from around the globe.

“Few people know European politics as intimately as Alexander. Adding his voice to our Board will be a major asset for Crisis Group, particularly as the Russian invasion of Ukraine is profoundly changing geopolitics on the continent”, added Crisis Group’s Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees Susana Malcorra.
