A senior U.S. Treasury Department official stated that "Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, and we are continuing to maximise economic pressure on the regime to combat its weapons proliferation, terrorism and regionally destabilising activities... the total number of Iran-related sanctions targets under this Administration [is now up] to 927 entities, individuals, vessels and aircraft". She went on to underscore that "those who engage in activities that run afoul of U.S. sanctions risk severe consequences, including losing access to the U.S. financial system and the ability to do business with the U.S.".
