As senior analyst for Ukraine, Lucian tracks and analyses developments in the war in Ukraine. His responsibilities include researching domestic Ukrainian politics, international support for Ukraine, and efforts to reach a just and sustainable peace.

Professional Background

Before joining Crisis Group, Lucian worked as a journalist covering Eastern and Central Europe. Most recently he was National Public Radio’s Moscow-based correspondent. Lucian first travelled to Ukraine in 2005 in the wake of the Orange Revolution and has returned regularly since. In 2014, Lucian covered Russia’s occupation of Crimea and support for an armed uprising in eastern Ukraine. He holds an M.A. in Nationalism Studies from Central European University. Lucian is the author of a book on the origins of the Ukraine war that will be published by Columbia University Press in late 2024.
