The Taliban declared a three-day ceasefire with the Afghan government starting on 24 May. President Ghani subsequently stated: “as commander-in-chief, I have instructed ANDSF to comply with the three-day truce and to defend only if attacked”. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the ceasefire and emphasised that “the U.S. remains committed to the implementation of the U.S.-Taliban agreement and the U.S.-Afghanistan Joint Declaration”. He went on to state that “we hope this ceasefire can build trust. Next, all sides should work together to build on the momentum of this historic Eid ceasefire to move with urgency to intra-Afghan negotiations”.
