National Security Advisor John Bolton asserted that "after 40 years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has failed to fulfill its promises to uphold and safeguard the rights of its citizens. The fortieth anniversary of the Iranian regime only serves to highlight four decades of failure and broken promises". Bolton added that "it's up to the Iranian regime to change its behaviour, and ultimately up to the Iranian people to determine the direction of their country. The U.S. will support the will of the Iranian people and stand behind them to ensure their voices are heard". Later in the day, the White House published a video message from Bolton in which he maintained that "Iran continues to seek nuclear weapons... and ballistic missiles to use as delivery systems". Addressing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Bolton stated that "for all your boasts, for all your threats to the life of the American President, you are responsible for terrorising your own people... I don't think you'll have many more anniversaries to enjoy".
