The U.S. announced sanctions designations against "fourteen individuals and seventeen entities... in connection with Iran's Organisation of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), which has provided support to designated Iranian defence entities and whose key personnel played a central role in the Iranian regime's past nuclear weapons effort". An accompanying fact sheet underscored the need for "permanently ensuring Iran is unable to reconstitute any past weapons-related activities in the future", adding that "this is why Secretary Pompeo has called for a new comprehensive deal that permanently ends all paths to a nuclear weapon, demands that Iran fully accounts for its past nuclear weapons activities, submit to unqualified IAEA access, halt all enrichment activities and close its heavy water reactor".
