In a statement on demonstrations that began in south-western Iran in mid-July, the State Department “condemn[ed] the use of violence against peaceful protesters”, and affirmed “the right of Iranians to peacefully assemble and express themselves, without fear of violence and detention by security forces”. Washington also called on Tehran “to allow its citizens to exercise their right to freedom of expression and to freely access information, including via the Internet”.
