Secretary Pompeo described the ruling of the International Court of Justice in Iran's lawsuit against the U.S. as "a defeat for Iran", and proclaimed "that the U.S. is terminating the 1955 Treaty of Amity with Iran". He went on to say that the U.S. "will continue to make sure that we are providing humanitarian assistance in a way that delivers for the people we have spoken very clearly about, the Iranian people". In subsequent remarks, the national security advisor, John Bolton, also termed the decision "a defeat for Iran", and argued that "the court allowed Iran to use it as a forum for propaganda".
