Secretary of State Mike Pompeo affirmed that “the U.S. will put forward a resolution in the Security Council to extend the arms embargo on Iran [beyond October]”, adding that “the proposal we put forward is eminently reasonable”. Pompeo further suggested that “there are nations lining up to sell weapons that will destabilise the Middle East, put Israel at risk, put Europe at risk, risk American lives as well. We’re not going to let it happen”. “We’re deeply aware that snapback is an option that’s available to the U.S., and we’re going to do everything within America’s power to ensure that that arms embargo is extended. And I’m confident that we will be successful”, he remarked. Relatedly, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, commenting on a potential Russian or Chinese veto, stated that “right now the strategy is working with other members of the Security Council… and put them [ie, Russia and China] in a corner and shine a light on them. This is a choice between tyranny and freedom”.
