President Biden met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah, stressing the “continued provision of security assistance to support Afghan National Defense and Security Forces”. According to a U.S. readout, both sides acknowledged “the need for unity among Afghan leaders in support of peace and stability, and President Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to fully support intra-Afghan negotiations”. Biden also remarked that “our troops may be leaving, but support for Afghanistan is not ending, in terms of support and… helping maintain their military, as well as economic and political support”.
