San Salvador, El Salvador
24 January 2018
The International Crisis Group will be partnering with local NGO FESPAD to host a meeting in San Salvador to present Crisis Group's first report on the country, El Salvador’s Politics of Perpetual Violence. The report examines the complexity of the phenomenon of gangs in the country, as well as the public policies to fight them. On the 26th anniversary of the signing of the peace agreements, El Salvador suffers a crisis of crime that has claimed more lives than the armed conflict. The humanitarian crisis and displacement are worrying national institutions and other countries of the region. Political polarisation makes it difficult to make decisions on key issues, including addressing violence, rehabilitation and victim's assistance. Justice and security institutions, especially the National Civil Police (PNC), are being directly attacked by gangs and there are growing reports of extrajudicial actions by some public officials. In addition, the recent decision by the Trump administration to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for some 195,000 Salvadorans in the United States raises new questions and challenges for the country.
