Secretary Pompeo assessed that Iran's "behaviour hasn't changed materially. They're weaker. Their economy is a wreck. The Iranian people are very frustrated. Forty years on, forty years after the revolution, things are much worse for the Iranian people, and we're convinced that will lead the Iranian people to rise up and change the behaviour of the regime". Pompeo also addressed the issue of U.S. nationals detained in Iran, stating "we want them back. In return for American beginning to consider whether they [i.e Iran] can eventually return to the community of nations".
